Senior Team v Staffordshire

Worcestershire County Seniors’ Match Report. 

I knew before we arrived that this was the match to win as Staffordshire had recently won the Inter County Tournament and had a strong team. Although we had a top ten finish! So arriving at the crack of dawn I walked the course and prepared the pin positions for my team only to find later that the positions had been changed before we started!!!!!

However, the team were in buoyant mood and at lunchtime we were 2 points in the lead. On course reports were showing some very close matches and our first pairings lost on the last green and my own match with Lawrence Hawker was all square on the 18^th tee but regrettably one of our opponents, who had been missing a shed full of puts all the way round, sank a 30 footer to win by 1 hole. This was quickly appeased with Grenville Rose and Will Painter who secured a much needed win by 3 to 2.

When Willie Kerr and John Silvester then came home with a win the overall result was finely balanced as we only needed a half to win the match. Imagine the tension when our fifth match then lost leaving our final pairings of Peter Adams and John Swann to decide our fate. Coming up the 18^th we were 1 up and, thanks to a superb par by our team, we won that match with the overall result of 10:8.

As mentioned this result was well deserved and played in great spirit. Our thanks as always go to the Staffordshire Team for their hospitality and friendship and to South Staffordshire Golf Club for allowing us the courtesy of their course which was in superb condition with fast greens and not forgetting the club house staff and catering for looking after our needs throughout the day.

We now stand at 6 matches won and 2 lost and our final match against Gloucestershire is on Wednesday September 21^st at Moseley where the team selection is going to be very difficult with so many good and keen players in the squad.
