League Match Report

Worcestershire 2nds Versus Staffordshire 2nds – 13.05.2012

The winning 2nd Team at Blackwell on Sunday 13th May 2012

This match was played on the jewel in the Worcestershire crown, Blackwell Golf Club.  The course was in its usual pristine condition, with the greens running very true and a nice pace.  This was to be our first league match of the 2012 season, and after many changes to the side due to the usual Saturday night drop-outs, we had on paper a new look, but more than capable team.        

The foursomes started well for Worcestershire, with the pairing of Berwick & Myatt kicking things off with an impressive 5&4 win, this was quickly followed up by Dave Marshall & Ben Robinson with another solid 4&3 win playing sub-par golf.  County Chairman Bill Thompson & myself found ourselves out of luck and 4 down on the 11^th tee, but after a valiant fight back got the match back to all square on the 18^th tee, only for our opponents 18ft birdie attempt to drop into the back of the hole after sitting on the edge for 5 seconds, giving Staffordshire a 1 hole victory.  The other two matches went perfectly to plan with Paul Evans & Ben Yeomans winning by 1 hole and late call-up Josh McMahon & partner Phil Dyke comfortably winning 3&2.  Leaving Worcestershire with a 4 - 1 lead going into the 10 singles matches.

Ben Robinson was sent out number 1 and played some great golf winning his match by 2 holes, followed by the ever steady James Berwick 3&1, Ben Myatt who hit some amazing tee-shots driving the 351 yard par 4 – 5^th hole 3&2, and myself 3&2.  This gave us the 4 points required for an overall victory, we then suffered a mini slump with Ben Yeomans, Paul Evans, Josh McMahon & Bill Thompson all losing.  The ever reliable and vastly experienced Dave Marshall & Phil Dyke added another 2 points to the teams total, giving us a 6-4 singles win and an overall 10-5 victory, putting us joint top of the league with last year’s champions Nottinghamshire.   

I would like to thank all the players for their superb effort & commitment to this fixture, everyone from the Staffordshire Golf Union & their captain Jon Haynes. 

Also I would like to pass on a big thank Blackwell Golf Club for the way they looked after everyone throughout the whole day, and for the preparation of the course.  It’s always easy to get a team out for a match at Blackwell !!  A big thanks to Worcestershire’s past president Norman Bolton and vice president Graham Yardley for their assistance & support during the day.
