We arrived at a bright & breezy Redditch Golf Club, with, on paper, a strong county 2nd side for this our first competitive match of the 2011 season.
The foursomes were very tight with both teams getting to grips with the well presented course and true running greens early on, 3 of the matches went all the way to the 18th green. Worcestershire edged the morning’s matches 3-2 with good performances from everyone involved.
Needing 5 points for victory from the 10 singles matches, we loaded the front of the team to get points on the board early, this appeared to pay off, with wins from, Darren Smith, Greg Higgitt, Ben Myatt & myself, giving us 4 points from the first five matches and a great start. However, then the wheels came off, we failed to get a single point out for the last five matches, with a strong Derbyshire side inflicting some heavy defeats on some of our younger team members!
This giving Derbyshire a very close 8-7 victory, with them winning a disappointing 6 out of 10 singles matches.
I would like to thank all the players for their effort & commitment to this fixture, everyone from the Derbyshire Golf Union , their captain Dan Walker, Redditch Golf Club for the superb course & refreshments, and the Worcestershire officials who attended, Mr Bill Thompson, Mr Andrew Boyd, Mr Peter Adams and especially Mr Roy Hobbis our starter for the day.
