Worcestershire 1st Team v Staffordshire
on 13th May 2012 at South Staffs Golf Club
Following an interesting selection process the strongest team available went to South Staffs golf club for the 1st league game of the season. The course was in fantastic condition and after a super cooked breakfast the team were given a pre match team talk and sent out to do battle. Sadler and Heeley sped off into the distance and, as always produced a fine display and gave us the first points on the board with a 3/2 victory. The pairing of Mason and Palmer solidly won their game with Palmer still sporting what can only be described as a “harpoon” in his ear. Captain Wallace and partner Ager, a pair that seem to be emerging into a strong partnership, after their normal slow start, emerged victorious. Lane and Hill won...that’s it....simple......they don’t lose......a great pair. The normally strong partnership of Bromley and Nugent unfortunately lost....words were had and they promised never to do it again.
WORCESTERSHIRE LEAD 4 - 1
THEN CAME LUNCH and Worcestershire put captain Wallace v the carvery, Worcestershire's point here was never in doubt!!! First unofficial point of the afternoon. The singles were lead off by Sadler who lost heavily and when Heeley could only manage a half Staffs felt they may have a chance to get back in. Lane, Mason and Palmer then secured 3 points with strong victories leaving Worcestershire requiring 1/2 a point for victory. Hill decided that he wanted to take the glory and soundly won 6/5 in game 10 and the victory was ours. Both Ager and Wallace could never get going in the afternoon, Wallace's performance possibly due to a dodgy Yorkshire pudding(the 8th one must have been off!!) and both lost, leaving Bromley to win a final point and give Worcestershire a 10 –5 victory with Nugent halving his game.
This is a fantastic start to the league campaign and let’s hope we can get another victory at Kidderminster in June.
Thank you to the Staffordshire County and South Staffs Golf Club for their hospitality and to all the supporters for Worcestershire. Following his fleeting 1/2 point in the friendly Andy Lammas resumed his position as “refreshment coordinator” (waterboy) and kept the guys up to date on the scores and refreshments for the duration of the day, THANKS AGAIN ANDY from all the guys.
Looking forward to the next game
