Match Report

Following a number of drop outs from both teams the County 1st’s came to Cleobury hoping for a win to take them into

the 1st league match of the season. Led out by local player Jack Pringle and Scott Mason we were looking for a quick start, unfortunately, they were putted off the course and went down to a 3/1 loss in the foursomes.

Late replacement Andy “waterboy” Lammas came in and played with club foursomes partner Wallace. There were a number of points during the front 9 when Wallace seriously thought he’d be carrying the water and bananas for the rest of the season. Lammas chipped and putted like a regular 1st team player but Wallace showed true class by coming strong on the back 9 with some solid golf and the first points were put on the board for Worcestershire.

The pairings of Reeves and Ager and Hercik and Vigurs comfortably won leaving a very important 5th game coming down the last 1up. Bromley played a great second shot into the green and was unlucky to see it roll off the edge. After Gloucs holed a 25 foot putt for the par Hill made, what can only be described as 'weak' putt which left Bromley with a tricky 4 footer. Just like Hunstanton 2 years ago where Bromley was placed in a similar position on the last he duly slotted the putt and the score was 4 – 1 to Worcestershire at lunch.

The singles, for some strange reason, seems to be where we let teams back into the game and today was no different. Pringle and Hercik both went down 2/1 and Mason was sitting 1 down with 2 to play. Meanwhile, Wallace had found a game and was in the process of getting the 1st singles point for Worcestershire. As the scores were being relayed, Wallace wondered where the winning points were going to come from...then the breakthrough.....MASON played a blinder, won the last 2 holes to win his game 1up. All memories of a seriously dodgy cardigan that had been worn in a previous game were gone.

Lammas after playing so well in the morning came up against the formidable Mr Rudge. As Rudge completed 11 holes in 5under Lammas was soundly beaten, however his work had been done in the morning...Back to water and bananas next match Andy . With Bromley soundly beaten and Hill winning comfortably the match was coming down to the final games of Vigurs, Ager and Reeves. Vigurs was coming back and calmly took his game to the last hole for a respectable half.

Ager was seen running towards the Captain...surely to tell him “don’t worry skipper I’ll get the point”.....instead of that the request of “gra have you got any more balls, I’m all square but only have 1 left?” After some frantic calls to the Chairman and Treasurer where budgets and expenditure were checked and BACS transfers made, I was given the OK to give out more supplies to Ager...With his county logo’d Commando and DDH Marathon he proceeded to chip and putt exquisitely at the 17th to gain the point required to bring victory home. Reeves nearly pulled back a half but was just pipped on the 18th to lose 1 down.

FINAL RESULT  8 1/2 to 6 1/2

WORCESTERSHIRE WIN

I’d Just like to thank all the players and supporters for their efforts on the day and Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club for their hospitality. I would also like to wish the Gloucestershire Team all the best for the coming season

By Graham Wallace

County Captain.
